It’s nearly 11:30pm and the temperature here is sitting at around 36 degrees. Stepping outside it’s a lot like a very nice summer’s day, except that trying to frolic in the sunshine leaves you with a high probability of ending up with a broken bone of some sort, because it’s pitch black outside.
When the weather is like this, it seems like a waste to sleep. I feel like I need to go out and do something, only I’m at a loss for what I should do. I’m thinking maybe it would be a good night to go out and take some photos, but I don’t have a tripod and it’s a little hard to take photos in the dark without one.
It’s nights like this that I miss being closer to the city. I would love to be able to step outside and stroll around knowing that things would be open and there would be things to do. Instead I live in the outer suburbs, where the only thing open at this time of night is the local pub, which is full of bogans.
Really, I’m like two different people stuffed into one body. On one hand, I’m the lazy homebody who likes nothing better than to sit down with a good book and do absolutely nothing for hours and hours on end. On the other hand, I’m also this person who longs for something more fun to do – to go out and wander the city, being caught up in the constant movement of it all. I want to live near a whole heap of cool bars that I can just walk to whenever I feel the urge. Here, I have 2 pubs within walking distance, but they’re the kind that are full of old men with only half their teeth who spend their evenings drinking cheap beer and betting on dog races.
I’m sure there must be some compromise between the two. Maybe I need to wander around the streets with a book while drinking beer. Not sure how well that would work. Maybe I’ll give it a go. It’s such a nice night, after all...

Too hot
It's disgustingly, stiflingly hot today. 43 degrees and completely cloudless. The second you step out into the sun you can feel your skin start to sear. So I'm stuck inside with nothing to do but read books I've already read a hundred times or to watch tv for hours on end. It's even too hot to sit at my computer in the study where the aircon won't reach, so I'm writing this letter by letter on my iPod.
At least I've managed to kill a bit of time... How do people live in climates that are like this all the time?!?

Mondays are a beautiful thing when you have the week off and the temperature is going to be mid 30’s every day!
Photos and a Hot House
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
The Photo5 finalists were posted late yesterday and sadly, I didn’t make the cut. A couple of people I have met through my photography did though, which is great because if I can’t be in the finals, I’m glad that someone I know is.
I thought some of the judges choices were a bit odd, in particular in the close up brief, where they seem to have picked some of the less creative entries, which doesn’t really seem to match with the info from the judges about what their choices would be based on. I guess there’s no accounting for personal taste though.
We’re in the middle of some kind of random November heat wave here at the moment. Apparently this is the biggest streak of super hot weather since 1925 or something like that. It’s been 34 degrees for the last few days, and it will be a minimum of 30 degrees every day for the entire week. I don’t mind hot weather usually, but when it’s consistent for a week like this it sucks because the house bricks heat up and no matter how long the air-con is on, the second you turn it off, you’re in a sauna again.
Also, sadly, we only have one air conditioning unit in the house and it’s on the entire other side of the house to the bedroom. So when it’s boiling hot in the middle of the night, you’re in the hottest part of the house. I might have to take to sleeping on the dining table so that I can keep cool. I also briefly considered replacing my bed with a wading pool so that I could stay cool, but the risk of accidentally drowning in my sleep far outweighs the benefits of being cool all night. Although then again, a wading pool is a hell of a lot cheaper than another air conditioner...
Hot Stuff

They must be, because every other part of my body seems to be. The weather here is freakishly hot considering it's not even summer yet. Yesterday was 37°C (that's 98.6°F for those of you who insist on using weird measurements just like my 1970's oven) and today was 35°. This is allegedly spring weather, but there is nothing springy going on around here because everyone is too hot to be bouncy.
The most irritating thing about the heat is the fact that both yesterday and today I was stuck in a traffic jam on the way home from work. It took me over an hour to get home both days (a 30 min. trip) and my car doesn't have air conditioning. In fact, it has a heater that insists on working even when it isn't turned on. This is very practical in winter, but in summer it means that my legs feel as though they are on fire for the majority of each trip. I was hoping to save this joyous phenomena for the summer months but alas, global warming has other plans.
If weather like this (and worse) is what is in store for summer, then I think I might have to consider migrating somewhere colder for the summer - like into my refrigerator.
